Black Friday
When Black Friday was originally established in 1952 it commemorated a dark turn for American holiday traditions. The Friday following Thanksgiving was given this ominous name to commemorate the first day of the Christmas shopping season. It was the day when retailers balance sheets changed from red to black. That sounds like a good thing, right?! We would agree, if it was really about the American economy, but it’s not! It’s about shoppers being trampled, fighting tooth and nail for the best deal. Who cares about the retailers’ balance sheets, it’s all about MY bottom dollar, baby!
Litigation Lottery
Solving the holiday budget crisis doesn’t have to stop at shopping online ads at 12:01 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning. You could win the litigation lottery with the right lawsuit! In 2015 a group of consumers sued Macy’s and JC Penney’s for misleading them with inflated original prices. That’s right folks, your parents aren’t the only ones who have mastered the art of psychological manipulation.
After showering a crowd with pepper spray at a California Walmart, Elizabeth Macias then tried to sue the store for not providing enough security during their 2011 Black Friday door-buster. You would think avoiding a FELONY is gift enough for one holiday season. I do suppose any mother might do the same after witnessing her teenagers being beaten to the ground by total strangers.
